The IT industry in the UK needs around 110,000 new entrants this year and will have to grow 5 times faster than the average for other UK industries if it is to keep pace with demand.
The Technology Insights 2011 report by e-Skills UK predicts that employment in the IT industry over the next 10 years will grow 2.19% a year. This is 5 times faster than the UK average and indicates that over 500,000 professionals will be needed in the next 5 years.
The research notes that the proportion of IT and telecoms professionals under 30 has fallen from 33 per cent in 2001 to only 19 per cent in 2010, whilst the number of employees over 50 has almost doubled to 17 per cent.
e-Skills UK chief executive Karen Price said "There is a particular need for new types of development programmes that help young people move into IT roles and become productive more quickly, and for continued action to attract talent from all sources, particularly women."
E-Skills has predicted that by exploiting the full potential of the technology sector the UK economy could be boosted by £50bn over the next five to seven years.
